BRICs - Shopping List Software

This website provides a free and private "shopping list software system" that uses database design concepts in a cloud spreadsheet template. This system was originally designed and used by a Residential Contractor / Property Developer for the creation of complex shopping lists, created by project, but it has far more applications beyond that.

It was designed for computer users who then print out the list for physical shopping purposes. It is accessible via mobile devices and can work okay for reading the lists, but it is not overly ideal for those applications. Those who do complex shopping trips will understand this better than those trying to imagine or envision them.

This new type of spreadsheet based "DIY Software" was "invented" to compete with "Software as a Service" (Saas) and Downloadable Software. The engineers serving those markets simply weren't fulfilling the full spectrum of needs of our Global Commercial Community in an affordable, honest, and sincere manner.

Hopefully, when you realize this particular application was built out with only two extremely simple "queries" that you can both understand and master in under 10 minutes, that will make this a fabulous tool for far more personal empowerment and encouragement too.

This is designed to introduce that concept while providing a functional tool that everyone can "enjoy" day in and day out. BEST PRACTICES FOR LEARNING ABOUT AND USING THIS "SOFTWARE APPLCIATION" AND THIS TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY:

It's best to be working on a computer with a minimum of two monitors attached, or one large monitor that is big enough to view a minimum of two screens at one time. Alternatively have two computes side by side.

Put this Website up on one monitor. Put your newly downloaded application (spreadsheet) in the other monitor.

Skim or read all the information on this web page first then go back and start opening the applications. Without skimming everything first you may be stuck thinking about things that are explained easily a bit later on. There is no ideal order for written presentation. What's best for each is individualized and it's impossible to put it in the right order for everyone.

It takes more screens than many are use to.
It takes a greater ability to read than most prefer these days.
It takes a smart person to realize they should skim an entire page or document before they start deep diving into that which is of most interest.

We have dozens of other software templates to share with you. To keep our time and costs minimized, we focus on written education and documentation because it can be edited and tweaked far easier as areas needing improvement are pointed out. Written material also provides for much faster reference material when you need to look back at something. We may add videos at a later date. If so, they will likely be "dated" within weeks or months as we upgrade and change information and documentation, but so goes the game.

Shopping List Software - Example 1
This is a ONE Worksheet solution. The "select list items" (aka "pick list items" aka "categorization list items") are secretly hidden above the application interface. An alternative option with the "select lists" below the application interface is included too.

The first three worksheets are functionally identical. The second and third just have a little more data in them so you can see what it looks like as a list gets longer. If you try to "freeze" the header rows for a better digital experience (see written instructions if you are not familiar with this), when you open the hidden header to modify the categorization lists, you will get errors due to screen limitations. For this application that isn't overlay relevant but for others it might be.
The fourth worksheet provides the same user experience, but the category/pick list items are below the application interface. This allows for the frozen headers and it only requires a little modification of the formulas for the worksheet. This requires slight modifications for the formulas for creating the shopping list. One disadvantage of this is the potential to accidentally delete the pick lists when adding rows or just not paying attention.

Shopping List Software - Example 2
This is a TWO worksheet solution. This puts both select lists on a "_validation worksheet".

The "_validationWorksheet' is what we refer to as a silent worksheet because it's intended to do work in the background without a lot of regular user interaction .
In a larger application this is how the select lists are often presented.
However, we don't typically put a list that the user will be changing regularly on the "_validation" worksheet like this.
That can work fine, but it's better to make that list public and then mirror it on the validation worksheet for access from the rest of the application.
See Example 3 for that three worksheet setup.

Shopping List Software - Example 3
This is a THREE worksheet solution. This puts the select list the user is likely to modify more frequently on worksheet that would typically always be visible, with a mirror of that data on the "_validationList" / silent worksheet along with the other select list that will not be modified regularly.

You can get the hang of this lingo and these design concepts very easily with just these examples. Once you understand these options you will be able to navigate dozens of othere DIY Software Templates with greater ease and little instruction.

Summary:

If you read about all three Examples without opening them, you've realized we just told you how this simple little application is a "modified version" of a DIY Software Programming Standard where three worksheets would work in tandem to provide the solution. You can now open up any DIY Software template (these or others), you can recognize sheets that are "Category Lists" regularly changed by you, you can recognize "application related worksheets", you can determine if any lists are hidden around the interface, and you know there is probably "_validation List" worksheet that you can check out and modify as needed. If you haven't already we start viewing and copying the templates and put them to use.
